Qustions For Henrietta Lack's Chapters 3 & 4
The Immortal Life of
Henrietta Lacks Review Questions for Chapters 3&4
What is the
difference between invasive carcinoma and carcinoma in situ?
Many believed that carcinoma in situ wasn’t
dangerous because they thought it couldn’t spread, however doctor TeLinde
believed it was just early stages of invasive carcinoma. Do you agree with
TeLinde’s theory? Why or why not?
On page 29 it talks about how most of the
time cervical cancer could be prevented or treated earlier but it isn’t why that
is? How could that relate to the medical field today?
“Scientists believed that since patients
were treated for free in the public wards, it was fair to use them as research
subjects as a form of payment. “ What is your reaction or opinion towards this
statement made in the book? Why?
On page 31 the book describes how Henrietta
signs an OPERATION PERMIT does this short consenting paragraph ever consent to
having her cells tested on? What are your thoughts?
“Radium causes mutations that can turn into
cancer, and at high doses it can burn the skin off a person’s body.” Many died
from Radium during trails, Henrietta’s doctor thought it would be better to
give her radium then surgery. Why do you think the doctor did this? After
reading what Radium causes do you agree that it was the best choice?
On page 35 they explain how if doctor Gey needed
umbilical cord blood it was only a ring away and could just get some. Do you
think that when were in the hospital for something we could be potential test
subjects or have times changed?
When Doctor Gey used chickens to collect
samples of blood and if some of the chickens died from stress would take them
for dinner. How does this describe what kind of person Doctor Gey is?
During the whole time Henrietta is in the
hospital and they are doing things to her they never explain to her what is
happening or how this will benefit her in getting better. How different have
the times change from then to now?
Now that you read the following two chapters
how do you feel about this book and what do you expect to happen later on?
